Reflections on Jamaica
Feb 27 @ 2:30 PM – 3:30 PM

I’m home now from Jamaica.  To say I’m relaxed is putting it mildly; I’ve sort of forgotten what the other world is and does as I’ve allowed myself to move nearly exclusively in mine for the last several days.

Having two of three sisters with me during the vacation made for a different holiday.  I think we’re all really glad we got to do that time together.  I image my foibles irritated them; some of theirs ticked me, but overall it was quite fun to delve into who we are and where we’ve come from, together and separately.  Perhaps we’ll meet here again soon.

Nature.  Respect.  Bounty and Poverty.  These four things.  First, just walking up the beach, checking my gait as I go, experimenting with weight placement, moving posture; there’s a great deal to be gained from a good walk!  And twice a day is even better, other than a burned right side of body, back of shoulder first, front of shoulder home.  Sitting in the shade of a tree, looking right at the water, being alone enough, stretching the tightness out of the deep places.  Running into the water, then slow-motion running through the chest high water to stretch the joints all through.  Nibbling on coconut, or pineapple, or sucking on a star apple.  Floating.  Looking at live urchins and stepping around them.  Reveling in the body and the feelings in the body.  Quietly and joyously opening to the world.

Respect.  Has it changed, or have I, or has something?  Generally I feel I understand that one of the things I most like about being here is the level playing field most native folks I’ve come across will give to anyone who crosses their path.  I don’t see respect from one black to another as having any grudge material between the two (though it may be there and I can’t see it).  Sometimes I feel I’m seeing some pretty hostile feeling being suppressed toward me, a white man, possibly simply because I’m white.  But generally, everyone is pretty respectful, pretty much of the time.  I like it that preacher’s daughter, hooker, maid and matron all get a respectful greeting from most people in most social situations.

Bounty and Poverty.  It were ever thus.  It’s so hard to feel/believe I have enough money when I come down here and put myself on a budget.  I’m not a wealthy person, until I compare myself to most of the people I see who live and work here.  Usually I’m fairly generous with others here; occasionally I may err on the side of being stingy.  While I realize everyone has kids to feed, I can’t feed every kid on the island, and I don’t do most of the tourist things; I come to walk, stretch, sun and soak.  So I’m living in bounty without carrying money.  But the poverty is intense, and we forget how exiting an old pair of our sandals can be to someone with nothing.  My first trip, a man I met on the beach could see my nervousness in talking with him and being a bit fearful of a fleecing.  He asked me, “So, do you think a thief is a bad man?”  After thought I answered, “No, I think he’s a hungry man, and it’s up to me to decide if I want to feed him.”  He looked at me with respect.

Ah, Jamaica…think I’ll stay a bit longer next year, and hopefully get Glo and a couple others down….
